WE BUY (Generally Trade-in value only) AND SELL!! We have ALL types of items, but we specialize in books and educational products. We are a brick-and-mortar store in Chicago that offers tutoring as well. We teach in the college classroom as well as work at our store. We hope you love our store!!

The owners of Tattered Tomes are College Instructors who love to teach, as well as learn. We want to foster this in all the people we meet! Most of our inventory is comprised of used books. Some are remainders (meaning they have a black marker mark on their sides). Some are new. Some are collector's.

Many of our books are excellent for homeschooling. We are booksellers, and we have occasional "large bulk" sales. This is where you get a DEAL on lot amounts, because we have to move inventory in our brick-and-mortar store. Some details are in the listings, but because the prices are so LOW on these, the book choices are random. We don't carry poor quality books, so you won't receive them! Sometimes, the books, especially hard to find (like sci-fi and other collector's books) may be in acceptable condition, which means they have minimal markings or heavier than usual wear. HOWEVER, ALL of our books are excellent reading copies. Please be sure to pay attention to the listing details. You are likely to receive the condition noted. ie. If they are bulk, they may have creases to spine or some minor dog-earing, but all pages will be there, they will not smell bad, and they will be excellent reading copies.

We list our books individually as well. Please email for details. As mentioned, we are located in Chicago. If you would like to save on shipping, you will be invited to drop off / pick up items in person. In this case, you will only be charged a small handling fee. Tattered Tomes also takes books in on trade! If your books are accepted, you will be issued a voucher that can be spent on any of our items in our store within 90 days of voucher-issue.

Our trade-in policy is as follows:

  • We generally pay out garage sale prices in voucher
  • Kids—10 cents each
  • Ppk 5 for $1.00
  • HB 25 to 50 cents each.
  • ONLY like new to new condition accepted. No creases to spine or dog-ears. Such books are only considered if they are hard-to-find, or are collectors'.
  • Books MUST be clean and odor-free.
  • DJ must be included where appropriate.
  • BCE’s are considered, but please be aware that these are not usually acceptable.
  • WE CANNOT accept encyclopedias. Please do not send them.
  • Occasionally, we will accept something in less than new condition if we judge it to be saleable. More MAY be paid for these items.
  • WE AIM TO BE FAIR TO ALL INVOLVED!! IF YOU HAVE A BOOK WORTH $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$, WE WILL TELL YOU!!!
  • If you wish to be considered for trade, you MUST send us your books first. We will then appraise them, and give you a dollar value amount. This dollar amount may be applied to any items in our stores.
  • When you send us books, the shipping price is just that—shipping. Please remember that the USPS gets this, not us, and we cannot guarantee that your books are worth anything until we actually see them.

If you need a ballpark idea, please email us the ISBN’s, the titles, the condition of the books, etc. We will do our best to accommodate you and to provide you with an accurate estimate. But PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE remember that until we see the books, we simply can’t issue you a voucher.
Vouchers and all other transactions will be conducted through PayPal / eBay.

We also accept money orders. Cash accepted only if you visit our store in Chicago. IF YOU WANT BOOKS RETURNED TO YOU, YOU MUST PAY FOR THE RETURN SHIPPING. ONCE AGAIN, PLEASE REMEMBER WE DON'T MAKE MONEY FROM SHIPPING--THE POST OFFICE DOES!! We hope this answers most of your questions.
